WASHINGTON: Three Indian cities - Ahmedabad, Bangalore and Chennai - have been listed among the world's fastest-growing cities by Forbes magazine . It also called Gujarat the "most market-oriented and business-friendly" among Indian states.
"The urban powerhouses of the next decade aren't behemoths like New York or Mumbai, but smaller cities like Chongqing, China; Santiago, Chile; and Austin, Texas," it says shifting its focus from established global centres like New York, London, Paris, Hong Kong or Tokyo.
While "China's bold urban diversification strategy hinges both on forging new transportation links and nurturing businesses in interior cities," Forbes says "India, although not by plan, also is experiencing a boom in once relatively obscure cities."
"Its rising urban centers include Bangalore (home of Infosys and Wipro), Ahmedabad (whose per-capita incomes are twice that of the rest of India) and Chennai (which has created 100,000 jobs this year). Many of India's key industries - auto manufacturing, software and entertainment - are establishing themselves in these cities."
"The growth of India and China also creates opportunity for other emerging players, particularly in Southeast Asia by creating markets for goods and services as well as investment capital."
Forbes describes Ahmedabad as "the largest metropolitan region in Gujarat, perhaps the most market-oriented and business-friendly of Indian states."
Noting that Gujarat's policies helped lure away the new Tata Nano plant from West Bengal to Sanand, one of Gurajat's exurbs, it cites one Indian academic, Sedha Menon, as comparing the state - which has developed infrastructure more quickly than its domestic rivals - with Singapore and parts of Malaysia.
Many big players in tech and services - Goldman Sachs, Cisco, HP as well as India-based giants like Tata - have located operations in Bangalore, notes Forbes.
"But the city also boasts home-grown tech giants Infosys and Wipro, which each have over 60,000 employees worldwide."
But with Bangalore's population projected to reach 9.5 million by 2025, "maintaining Bangalore's advantage over smaller, less congested cities could prove a challenge," it says.
Chennai, projected to reach a population of 10 million by 2025, "has so far this year created over 100,000 jobs - more than any other Indian city outside of the much larger Delhi and Mumbai," Forbes says.
"Chennai's metropolitan area is taking full advantage of India's soaring industrial sector, particularly the booming automobile sector. Electronics, led by Dell, Nokia, Motorola, Samsung, Siemens , Sony and Foxconn, are also booming. Chennai is home to India's second-largest entertainment industry, behind Mumbai."

State pegs hopes on upcoming IT infrastructure
The Times of India

AHMEDABAD: Having missed the IT bus a few years ago, Gujarat is now working to get close from where it can make up for the loss.
In the last few months, the state has pegged its hopes on the upcoming IT SEZ infrastructure that is poised to provide a major boost to the damp IT sector in the state. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) for instance, has kept its promise and has made quite a headway in the construction of its 35-acre IT SEZ campus, Garima Park. The campus is being developed by Tata Realty and Infrastructure.

Mindspace, promoted by K Raheja Corp. was the first IT-SEZ in the state to become operational near Koba Circle on Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar knowledge corridor. In March, Mindspace signed its first contract with USbased Kendle's group, a leading global clinical research organisation (CRO). The state government has allotted about 93 acres to Mindspace out of which 68 acres is notified for SEZ while 25 acres is for supporting activities.
InfoCity, state's first ITES park, is in talks with TCS and Wipro for developing additional IT space for the later, as was reported by TOI earlier. Recently, 3rd Eye Voice IT SEZ, Ahmedabad's first IT/ITES special economic zone (SEZ), is all set to become operational in March 2011.
Company officials claim that close to 100 small companies functioning from different locations under Software Technology Park of India (STPI) scheme are planning to shift to the upcoming Rs 550-crore project.
"TCS's Garima Park, estimated to be a Rs 420-crore plus project, would seefour blocks of TCS facility by the later half of 2011 which will cater to the needs of government and TCS's utility sector clients. The total construction area, including basement of the park will be about 1.40 lakh sq mt. The facility would exclusively focus on Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) projects being executed by TCS for its global clients. Currently, TCS operates from a rented space on InfoCity campus," says a senior Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC) official.
Also after DLF and Vascon Engineering which have either scrapped or put on hold their IT infrastructure plans, talks are on for allotting land for Satyam's IT park in Gandhinagar. About three months ago, Ganesh Housing Corporation had sought extension of the validity period of formal approval beyond December, 2009 for its IT SEZ near Chharodi.

City's First IT SEZ to start in March 2011

AHMEDABAD: The 3rd Eye Voice IT SEZ, city's first IT/ITES special economic zone (SEZ), is all set to become operational in March 2011. Already around 100 small companies functioning from different locations under Software Technology Park of India (STPI) scheme are planning to shift into the upcoming Rs 650 crore project.
Another two city-based companies, Elitecore Technologies Limited and Hi-Tech Outsourcing Services are also moving part of their existing business into the SEZ.
"3rd Eye is developing 36 lakh sq-ft infrastructure near Science City. Of the 10 buildings designed inside the SEZ, construction work of two towers is almost completed, where companies will start moving from March next year," said Bipin Shah, director of 3rd Eye Voice SEZ.
The company is also planning a 50-storey (200m) tower, which will be the tallest building of Gujarat inside any IT SEZ in India. Design of the proposed tower is ready, but implementation will depend on certain approvals from state and central governments, added Shah.
"We are in the process of acquiring 70,000 sq ft space in the SEZ and investing Rs 100 crore for new software product development," said Rakesh Mistry, chief finance officer, Elitecore.
Bhanu Gupta, director of Hi-Tech said his company will purchase 35,000 sq ft space. Uttam Patel, who is representing a consortium of around 100 small IT companies associated with STPI said that since subsidy on exports and benefits under STPI schemes will expire in October, his group was looking for 3 to 5 lakh sq ft space.
